IRB Handbook

What are the possible outcomes of an IRB review

The following dispositions are possible:

  • Approved: The study/project may commence
  • Modifications Required to Secure Approval: Changes are required so that the study/project will meet criteria for approval
  • Disapproved: The IRB has all the information it needs to make a determination, but the study/project does not meet criteria for approval
  • Deferred: This disposition is only used if an application is incomplete or a quorum is not met for a full board review

All applicants will receive written notification of the IRB’s decisions. It the activity is disapproved, notification will include reasons for the decision; you will have an opportunity to respond in person (e.g., over phone or a video call) or in writing.
