Retake

To retake a college course means that a student is enrolling in the same course again after having previously taken all or part of a course, usually to improve their final grade or their understanding of the material. There are several reasons why a student might choose to retake a course:

  • Grade Improvement: If a student is dissatisfied with their final grade in a particular course, they may retake it to attempt to achieve a higher grade. Please note as per the Course Retake Policy, the grade for the previous course attempt will be updated to an “R” on the transcript, which stands for “Retake”. The new grade will then be reflected as a separate attempt, and will replace the previous grade regardless of whether it is higher or lower, or a withdrawal.
  • Incomplete or Failed Course: If a student receives a W, WA, or U grade, they might retake the course to fulfill degree requirements or to address academic deficiencies.
  • Understanding the Material: Some students retake courses to understand the material better. This could be due to personal reasons, challenges during the initial attempt, or a desire to strengthen their knowledge in a particular subject.

Resubmitting
Resubmitting a paper, assignment, initial discussion post, or journal entry when retaking a course only after a previous attempt in the same Aspen University course. Resubmission is allowed without penalty, but efforts must be made to revise the initial submission to reflect further understanding and knowledge of the topic. This is not considered self-plagiarism; students must cite their previous work in the references.

Repurposing
Using parts of a previously submitted assignment and/or initial discussion posts for work in a subsequent course belonging to a different course within the degree sequence. Repurposing is allowed only with prior permission from the instructor of the current course, proper self-citations, and substantial revisions.

Recycling
Submitting a previously submitted assignment, initial discussion post or reply, journal entry, or other work for a course to a different parent course as though it were new work. Recycling constitutes self-plagiarism and is not permissible.

Resubmission Policy:

  • Instructors must be informed of the assignment resubmission prior to each submission. Students should email their faculty in advance to explain the reasoning for the resubmission and notify them of which assignments and/or coursework is being resubmitted. Instructors may contact the Academic Advising department to confirm the student is retaking the course.
  • Proper notification of the prior submission must be included on the resubmitted assignment. This can be included in the Author Note section of the title page. Example: This assignment was originally submitted on [Give the date] for [Give the course and the instructor].
  • The resubmitted assignment will be graded like a new submission.
  • The student is responsible for ensuring the reused assignment meets current course grading criteria and outcomes.
